Mac Presentation Tips for Teachers and Trainers (Classroom + Online)

Whether you teach in a classroom or over Zoom, your students need help knowing where to look. The good news: a few small habits and a couple of simple tools can transform how clear your lessons feel.

Presentify is a lightweight macOS app that lets you annotate any screen, highlight your cursor, and spotlight or zoom into details. Use it alongside the tips below to keep learners engaged.

1) Make your cursor visible

Most students follow the cursor more than your voice. Turn on cursor highlighting so they can track each action.

• Toggle highlight with ⌃ + S
• Pick a high-contrast color
• Enable click animations for clearer steps

2) Annotate instead of repeating

If you are explaining a diagram or problem, draw the answer instead of saying it twice.

• Toggle annotation with ⌃ + A
• Use arrows and circles to emphasize key points
• Clear drawings with ⌫ so the screen stays uncluttered

3) Use the whiteboard for explanations

When a concept needs a blank slate, use the whiteboard.

• While in Annotate mode, press W
• Sketch formulas, timelines, or flowcharts
• Switch back to your slides when done

4) Spotlight to reduce distractions

Dimming the screen with Spotlight helps learners focus on the current detail.

• Toggle Spotlight with ⌃ + L
• Resize the spotlight to the area you are explaining
• Great for busy dashboards or dense text

5) Zoom in on small text

Tiny labels or code are hard to read on projectors and video calls.

• Turn on Zoom to magnify what you are pointing at
• If Zoom does not work, enable Screen Recording permission for Presentify in macOS System Settings

6) Teach from the iPad if you prefer handwriting

If you like writing with a stylus, connect your iPad to your Mac with Sidecar or a similar tool and draw with Presentify while screen sharing.

7) Practice a repeatable flow

Students learn faster with a predictable rhythm. Try this structure:

1. Show the goal
2. Explain the concept on the whiteboard
3. Demonstrate the step in the app or slide
4. Recap with a quick annotation

8) Keep interactions smooth

When Presentify is active, press and hold the Fn key to interact with the underlying app. This lets you keep presenting while still clicking, scrolling, or advancing slides.

9) Share the full screen when possible

Presentify tools show most reliably when you share the entire screen (instead of a single window). If you need to keep private content hidden, use a second display.

10) Build a small shortcut habit

Only a few shortcuts are needed to teach confidently:

• ⌃ + L Spotlight
